Abstract

After the "success" of the ARPAnet and then the "success" of the NSF super computer centers (the HPCC Initiative), the US Federal government like all entrepeneurs started casting around for what to do next. Next comes the Digital Libraries Initiative. Phase 1 ran from fiscal year 1995 to FY 1998, and we are in the midst of phase 2. NASA joined the NSF and DARPA in phase 1 funding, in phase 2 we have added many more agencies for medical and humanitarian reasons. This presentation will skim the surface and act as a guide to understanding the motivations behind the Initiative, who's interested, and what the issues are for Digital Libraries. We will cover some of the obvious shortcomings of the Internet as it exists today as areas ripes for basic research.

Biography

Eugene Miya is the NASA Technical Reviewer for the Multi-Agency Digital Libraries Initiative. He is also the maintainer of the bibliographic database on parallel computing literature. Perhaps, he is best known for coining the phrase FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions) from ARPAnet mailing lists.
