Abstract

University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (Illinois) has developed deep relations with educational and research institutions in Singapore. Over the past two decades, Illinois has been successful to build Joint Degree program in Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering with National University of Singapore (NUS), a PhD partnership program (AUIP) with Agency for Science, Technology and Research (A*STAR) and currently has physical presence in Singapore through creating and operating a research center in IT area, called Advanced Digital Sciences Center, ADSC, funded by A*STAR. A*STAR is the lead agency for fostering world-class scientific research and talent for a vibrant knowledge-based and innovation-driven Singapore. A*STAR oversees 14 biomedical sciences (BMRC) and physical sciences and engineering (SERC) research institutes (RIs), and six consortia & centers, located in Biopolis and Fusionopolis as well as their immediate vicinity.

Top ranked local universities; the National University of Singapore (NUS), Nanyang Technological University (NTU), Singapore University of Technology and Design (SUTD), and Singapore Management University (SMU) offer scholarships and opportunities to qualified international students to pursue PhD studies on their campuses.

In addition, A*STAR offers 3-month internship opportunities at their Research Institutes (RIs), under a program named SIPGA, to qualified international students to develop interest in research and pursuing PhD studies.

In collaboration with local universities, A*STAR also offers 4-year scholarships to qualified international students to pursue their PhDs in Singapore while carrying their research at universities or RIs under a program called SINGA. To expand collaborations with other universities, A*STAR also provides opportunities and scholarship to currently enrolled PhD students in their home institutions to come to Singapore, take advantage of excellent facilities in RIs and continue their PhD research for a period of 1 to 2 years while co-supervised by scientists at RIs under a program called, ARAP.

As A*STAR funded research center, ADSC admits Interns and PhD candidates who will carry out their research under the supervision of Illinois faculty and researchers in the research center located in Fusionopolis and receive a degree from local universities. ADSC also can host currently enrolled PhD students in their home institutions under the ARAP program.
