Abstract

In P2P applications, participating peers form an overlay network through which they exchange data. Construction of the P2P overlays is often without any knowledge of the underlying network. The overlay impacts the underlay by the volume and pattern of the imposed traffic and the underlay may limit, block or otherwise affect the traffic flows associated with the overlay. The mutual impact between the overlay and the underlay is the main focus of this survey. The mutual impact is affected by: (i) overlay connectivity, traffic generation pattern and routing mechanism in P2P applications, and (ii) connectivity and routing policies in the Internet.

Toward this end, we cover three areas:
  1. the underlay: research studies on Internet topology
  2. the overlay: design and characterization studies on P2P applications
  3. the mutual impacts between P2P applications and the underlying network

In each area we categorize previous research works and discuss main challenges and issues.
