Graduate Admission
- Overview
-
The steps for applying for either the M.S. or Ph.D program in Computer
Science are described on this page. If you plan to submit an application,
we recommend you bookmark this page and refer to it often as you complete
your application.
The deadline for applications is January 15th, or the following Monday when it lands on a weekend. Applications received by this date will be considered for admission to graduate school the following September.
Admission decisions for funded positions are made between February and March, while results for non-funded students generally take place after the funded slots are filled. Note that financial award notices come in both hard copy and email, while non-funded ones come via email. Results are not posted via the online application.
- How to Apply
-
The Graduate Admission Application Form may be filled out online by going
to the
Online Graduate Application Guidelines page and then logging in. Once started, the form may be left unfinished until the deadline. Applicants will pay the application fee ($50.00) upon completion of the online form.
Note that a personal statement is submitted through the online process, as well as contact information for three recommendations. The three individuals will in turn be given email instructions on how to submit their recommendations.
- IMPORTANT NOTE:
-
Some required items should be mailed to the University of Oregon
Office of Admissions. Others should be mailed directly to the Department
of Computer and Information Science. These two offices are in separate
buildings. Materials sent to the wrong location may not be processed
in a timely manner.

- TOEFL or IELTS score (International students only)
- The Test of English as a Foreign Language or the Internation English Language Testing System Test may be waived if you have received a bachelor's degree or higher from an accredited U.S. institution or from an institution in the following countries: Australia, Canada (excluding Quebec), Ireland, New Zealand, or the United Kingdom. - Evaluation Criteria
-
Admission to the graduate program is based on computer science background,
prior academic performance, GRE scores, and letters of recommendation.
Minimum requirements for full admission are:
- The equivalent of an undergraduate degree in computer science,
including documented knowledge of
- principles of computer organization,
- programming languages,
- program development and analysis, and
- data structures and algorithm analysis.
Grades from previous coursework should indicate the ability to
maintain at least a 3.0 GPA in graduate level courses.
- Acceptable GRE scores on the general test. Under the old GRE scoring system (pre-8/1/11), minimum scores considered to be favorable are a verbal score of 500 or better, a quantitative score of 650 or better and an analytical score of at least 4.5. For details regarding the new GRE scoring system visit the Educational Testing Service's site http://www.ets.org/gre/revised_general/scores.
- A score of at least 100 on the TOEFL or 7.5 on the IELTS for International applicants who have no justification for a waiver.
- Funding
-
The only financial awards offered by our department are Graduate Teaching Fellowships. These positions are competitive and are generally awarded to newly admitted students during February and March for the following fall. On occasion, a new student is offered research funding in the form of a research fellowship; but this comes directly from a faculty member's resources.
Students who do not initially receive such an award may still remain in what we call our GTF Pool, and be considered for future teaching or research fellowship positions in the Department. Also students admitted without support may apply for GTFs in other departments. Such students should check the Graduate School's Funding Resource page regularly - http://gradschool.uoregon.edu/?page=fundingResources.
