Alum Gurdeep Pall Promoted to Corporate VP at Microsoft

Gurdeep Singh Pall

CIS alumni Gurdeep Singh Pall (M.S. '89) was recently appointed to the position of Corporate Vice President in the Real-Time Collaboration Group at Microsoft. He is also responsible for developing Microsoft's strategy in the Real Time Collaboration space - including the emerging Integrated Communications and VoIP areas.

Gurdeep joined Microsoft in 1990 as a Software Design Engineer. He has worked on many products in his tenure starting with LAN Manager Remote Access Service. He was part of the Windows NT development core team - working on the first version NT 3.1 in 1993 as a Software Design Engineer, all the way thru Windows XP in 2001 as General Manager of Windows Networking. During his work on Windows he led design and implementation of award winning technologies like PPP, TCP/IP, VPNs, Routing, WiFi, etc. He co-authored the first VPN protocol in the industry - Point to Point Tunneling protocol (PPTP) which received the prestigious Innovation of the Year award from PC Magazine in 1996. Gurdeep also authored several documents and standards in the networking area in the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF) standards body in the mid 1990's. Gurdeep became General Manager of Windows Real Time Communications efforts in 2002 and helped develop a broad RTC strategy which led to the formation of the Real-Time Collaboration division and acquisition of PlaceWare Inc. (now called Microsoft Office Live Meeting).

Gurdeep holds many patents in networking, compression and RTC areas. He holds a Masters degree in Computer Science from University of Oregon and an undergraduate degree in Computer Engineering from Birla Institute of Technology and Science.

Gurdeep did his M.S. thesis research on "RAGA: Musical Gantt Charts for Scheduling in Distributed Real-Time Systems" under the supervision of Prof. Virginia Lo. He was a member of the Exodos Distributed Operating System research group.
