Computer Security Day, Friday, April 1

Computer security has never played a larger role in shaping world events than it is now. Events such as the Stuxnet worm, the Wikileaks affair, and the role of the Internet and social networking sites in the Middle East, have played tremendous roles in foreign policy and the lives of millions around the world. As a result, understanding issues relating to the security of computers and networks has never been more important to more people than it is now.

On Friday, April 1, we proudly hosted the first Computer Security Day at the University of Oregon. This was an opportunity for students and faculty, as well as business and industry, to get together and discuss issues related to security and to hear from luminaries in the field regarding security issues of current and future importance in academia, industry, and government. There were five distinguished speakers who gave talks, including:

These talks ran the gamut from best practices in industry to cutting edge research in automotive and mobile phone security to visions of future threats to the Internet and society at large. Both technican and human factors in security were discussed. In addition, there was be an industry panel on security issues of concern to businesses in Oregon, as well as talks by faculty actively researching areas of interest to the security community.
