Colloquia and Talks
bring computer scientists from around the world to present their research in one hour lectures. An opportunity for students and faculty to mingle follows the formal presentation. Undergraduates are encouraged to keep an eye out for colloquia that are periodically offered especially for them.
Graduate Research Forum
an informal bi-weekly meeting for graduate students to discuss their research problems and exchange their ideas.
Programming Languages Summer School
Each summer, the UO hosts an international group of graduate students, professors and industry professionals who come together to learn about the application of formal methods in language theory to some area of computation.
Graduate Research Poster Contest
graduate students submit a poster describing their research. A faculty committee selects the winners and awards prizes that have ranged from cash awards to unicycles and gift certificates.
Student Groups
There are many student organizations offered through the department. Whether you are interested in the Open Source model, want to help shape department policy, or are a female student, there is something for everyone.
Programming Team
The CIS Department is especially proud of our successes in programming competition. Composed of a mix of graduate and undergraduate students, teams have done exceptionally well over the years, with many finishing in the top 20. There have even been a few teams to go to international competition - something even the UO football team can't boast.
Social Activities
The department has the following scheduled social activities for students and faculty.
Lunch with Andrzej
Every Thursday when he is in town, Andrzej Proskurowski, the CIS department head, hosts a BYOBB (Bring Your Own Brown Bag) lunch with all members of the department. All topics of conversation will be entertained, and some will even be discussed.
Juggling
Every Wednesday at Noon in the Colloquium Room, professors and graduate students will be on hand with balls and clubs. All members of the department are invited to learn or show off. All skill levels are welcome, including those who have never juggled.
Game Day
The first Monday of each month at 4:00 pm in the Colloquium Room, come to play all manner of games, including the ancient tile game of Mahjong, Settlers of Cattan, a game of strategy and intrigue, and the traditional midwestern card game, Euchre.
