CIS 610 - Teaching Effectiveness
Project
Students must complete a teaching project to obtain a passing grade in the Teaching Effectiveness Seminar. The project should be a practical, hands-on, experience that will enhance your teaching skills. Project proposals must be approved by the instructor and are due by the third class, Tuesday, October 9. Project proposals should contain a brief description (from one paragraph to one page) of the proposed project; a statement of the specific goal. Two examples of preapproved projects are given below. I will get back to you by Tuesday, October 24 with either project approval or suggested revisions. All projects must have final approval by week 4 (October 16). Project idea #1: podcasts in education - create a series of Webcasts (screencasts, enhanced audio podcasts or video podcasts) for the class that you are teaching or for computer scientists in general (I have some ideas, if you choose this one). Deadlines and deliverables: Week 5 - 1 completed podcasts - show to instructor Week 6 - create blog and post 2 podcasts - tell students who might be interested Week 7 - more podcasts (total of 5 or more) Week 10 - show podcast project to 610 class Project idea #2: Evaluation and Feedback.
Goal: Obtain feedback about your teaching to aid in evaluating and improving your teaching.
Description: Read Davis, chapters 41 and 42 online, and check out the "Services and Staff" portion of the TEP website, then arrange for evaluations to improve your teaching. You might get feedback from any or all of the following: your course instructor, your students, TEP. For example, you could have a class led by you video-taped, and then review the video with your course instructor or TEP. You might design a "fast feedback" form for your students to fill out for you and go over the results with TEP or your course instructor. Alternatively, you could arrange for TEP to conduct an interview with your students and discuss the results with you, and ask your course instructor to sit in on a discussion section or lab and talk about your teaching with you. Deadlines and deliverables: Week 5 - arrange for your class to be observed or taped by TEP or course instructor. Week 6 - review results of above with TEP or course instructor. Week 7 - implement an idea from above; arrange for feedback from students in your class. Week 8 - get feedback from students in your class. Week 9 - use an idea garnered from student feedback. Finals week - turn in summary of above: evaluation methods, results, and changes implemented, along with your own thoughts on your evaluation exercises.
