CIS 610:  Writing in Computer Research

Fall 2007:   Th 10:00-11:20 am, 200 Deschutes

Instructor: Professor Sarah Douglas, 343 Deschutes, phone 346-3974, email: douglas@cs.uoregon.edu.  Office hours: 2-3pm TuTh or by appointment.

Prerequisites:   Graduate standing and permission of instructor.

Description: This course is intended to help graduate students learn to write scientific papers for publication. We will follow a workshop format with peer review and discussion of writing samples. Students will be required to provide frank but constructive criticism of writing samples provided by other students, and to accept criticism in the same spirit.

Required Readings: The text for this course is Writing for Computer Science 2nd edition by Justin Zobel, price is $20.00.

Assignment #4 due:  Rewrite Assignment #3.  Due Dec 3.

Course Requirements:

  1. You are expected to attend every seminar for 10% of grade.
  2. You are expected to read the chapters and any assigned papers before the seminar.
  3. You are expected to participate in the discussion during the seminar for 10% of grade.
  4. You are expected to write four short (two pages) papers for 80% of grade.. Note: the papers must be handed in BEFORE we discuss the reading. 
  5. You are expected to facilitate at least one seminar.
