Project 1
Due 21:00 Fri, 1/19

Project 1 Requirements

  1. Business Card Photo for 382 Rollodex. Create a "passport/driver's license" style photo of yourself, optimized for the web, and upload it to 382-07.pbwiki.com. The photo's dimensions should be somewhere between 100x100 and 150x150, plusOrminus 5 pixels. The image file should be optimized for the web; i.e., no larger than 25 KB, and preferrably smaller.

Upload your photo to the 382 Wiki.

Tools for resizing an image: 1) ReSizr. Web app. 2) Picasa. Google's "rich client" for photo managment. Picasa's export feature allows you to resize image dimensions and set the file size. 3) Email Optimized Pictures From Windows XP. Just right-click on an image and choose Send to eMail Recipient-- you can resize the image and send it to yourself.

    Information Privacy on the Web.
Our wiki is password-protected. However, anyone not wishing to put a personal photograph on the web is welcome to use the generic.jpg instead.

  2. Create your "Business Card " on the 382 Wiki.

    1. Using Firefox, login to the 382 wiki
      URL: http://382-07.pbwiki.com/
      Password: 21313 (course crn)

    2. Your name already exists as a "CamelCase" link on the home page. If you edit this page to modify your name, remember to hit Save when you are done, as other people may be trying to edit the same page. While you are editing the page, it will be locked to others.

Main Page Policy: if the main page has been locked and idle for 10 minutes, you may "steal" the lock.

    3. Create a Business Card page that is connected to your name on the home page (a.k.a. 382 Rollodex). Provide your name and email address. Include your business card photo from step 2. The purpose of this page is to facilitate communication among members of your Virtual Learning Team (VLT-- see below) and your instructor.

Optionally, please provide a telephone number, but this is not required.

All required information & the photo must be "above the fold (a.k.a. above the scroll)." ; that is, no scrolling is necessary to view the key information.

Information Privacy on the Web. Our wiki is password-protected. However, anyone not wishing to publish personal information is welcome to use placeholder information instead. Note that if your telephone number and email address are listed in the UO phonebook, then this same information should be provided on the 382 wiki.

  3. Organize your 382 Virtual Learning Team (VLT).

Using the 382 Rollodex, contact at least two other students in class to form a VLT (a.k.a. online learning community). VLT's may consist of a minimum of 3 and a maximum of 4 students.

I can be your VLT organizer: Send me email requesting to be assigned to a VLT.

If your VLT has two members (or three) and you want me to find you a third (or fourth), send me email with your request.

  4. Create a VlTn wiki page.

When you have formed a VLT, edit the 382 wiki home page as follows:

    1. Add your team's name to the main page as a hyperlink.
    2. Create a VlT page that lists your team's members. Each team member's name is a link that connects to that person's Business Card page.

If a picture is worth a KB, then a screencast must be worth a MB (or 2.25 MB in this case, to be exact). You can view a CIS 110 Screencast that covered similar (but not identical) steps:

    vlt-wiki.wmv (2.25 MB)

  5. Project 1 Grading Rubric (available T 1/12). This document describes how your lab instructor (GTF) will grade your project. You should assess your project using this rubric before turning in your project. Also, this would be a good exercise for each member of your VLT: assess each other's work using this rubric before submitting it.

The rubric page will describe how to submit this project for grading using Blackboard.
