Google Apps. The first internet-based platform we will explore is Google Apps Team Edition, which offers next-generation (Web 2.0) communication and collaboration tools.
To get started, open the Google Apps Team Edition sign up page, and enter your uoregon email address. You will then receive email from google apps to verify your school email address.
Once you confirm your email address, you have access to a suite of Google applications, and the first one we'll use is google sites.
Google Sites. JotSpot was founded in 2004 as the first company to provide an application wiki. Google acquired Jotspot and re-released it as google sites, part of the google apps suite.
Enter your uoregon.edu email address in the Sign Up form-- this will take you to your google apps dashboard.
Open the Sites Beta link. This will take you to your google sites dashboard.
Create an ID-style photo for 281. Create
an ID style photo of yourself, optimized for the web.
The photo's dimensions should be somewhere between 100x100 and 150x150. The
image file should be optimized for the web; i.e., no larger than 25 KB, and
preferrably smaller.
Tools for resizing an image: 1) Email
Optimized Pictures From Windows XP. Just right-click
on an image and choose Send to eMail Recipient-- you can resize the image
and send it to yourself. 2) Picasa.
Google's "rich client" for
photo managment. Picasa's export feature allows you to resize image dimensions
and set the file size. 3) ReSizr.
Web app.
To qualify as an ID-style photo, it must be a headshot similar to what is used on a UO photo ID. The goal here is to help your instructor and GTFs associate your name with your face. Therefore, you must be easily identifiable from the ID photo. If you have information privacy or other concerns, see 111 Policy on Information Privacy on the Web, below.
Create an "Employee Profile" Website at Google Sites.
Click the Employee Profile link to see an example of a profile site.
Enter your uoregon.edu email address in the Sign Up form, then click Sites Beta to open your google apps dashboard.
Click the Create new site button.
Name your site carefully, as this determines your site's URL, which cannot be changed once created. Use something short and based on your name. For example, Jille Bonnefemme chose her DuckID for the name of her employee profile site: jilleb.
Make your site viewable to other uoregon.edu students only.
Add your ID photo (or the generic image), your name (required)
and your uoregon.edu email address (optional). You do not have to make an elaborate profile site (although you are welcome to be creative).
281 Policy on Information Privacy on the Web: Any 281 student not wishing
to publish personal information is welcome to use a generic
image and placeholder
information instead. Note that if your telephone number and email address are
listed in the UO
phonebook then this same information should be provided on your employee profile.
Link your employee profile to the 281 Wiki on Google Sites. Add your name to the Class Rollodex page, (alphabetical order, by last name). Turn your name into a hyperlink that connects to your employee profile site.
Project 1 Grading Rubric. This document describes how your lab instructor (GTF) will grade your project.
You should assess your project using this rubric before turning in your project.
On or before the due-date submit the project using Projects > Submit Project 1 in Blackboard. Since all your files are on uoregon.edu, you do not have to submit any attachments-- you can ignore the "Attach local file" option in BB.
If you do not use this BB assignment turn-in feature, your project cannot be graded and your score will be zero (0).
