CIS 610 Teaching Effectiveness:
Tools for Teaching
Winter 2010
Project Information

Students must complete a teaching project to obtain a passing grade in the Tools for Teaching Seminar. The project should be a practical, hands-on experience that will enhance your teaching skills.

Project proposals must be approved by the instructor and are due by the third class, Friday, January 22.

Project proposals should contain (1) a brief description (one paragraph to one page) of the proposed project; (2) a statement of the specific outcome you hope to achieve by the completion of the project, and (3) project deliverables and deadlines.

Two examples of preapproved projects are given below. You may use one of these projects, or propose a different one. If your project is of general interest and lends itself to presentation, please consider scheduling a time to present your results to the class.

I will get back to you by Wednesday, January 27, with project approval or suggested revisions. All projects must have final approval by Wednesday, February 3.

Project 1: Education Technology

Goal: Learn about and use a new-to-you education technology - for example, class wiki, iclickers, Blackboard, podcasts, etc. - to aid and improve teaching - for example, classroom presentations, learning assessment.

Description: The class text and the "Teaching with Technology" area of the TEP website both include myriad ideas for using ed tech. Explore, then decide on the technology you will try, and the outcome(s) you hope to achieve through its use. Use the educational technology in your classroom/teaching experience. Finally, report on your experience and any action(s) you take as a result of your experience with the educational technology.

Deadlines and deliverables:
Week 4 - explore readings and TEP website; decide on educational technology to try and desired outcome;
Week 5 - learn about the new technology; arrange for classroom/teaching use;
Week 6-8 - implement the education technology; adjust as necessary;
Week 9-10 - summarize (1-2p.) and turn in your evaluation and feedback experience: evaluation method(s), results, changes implemented, and your own thoughts on the evaluation.

Project 2: Evaluation and Feedback.

Goal: Obtain feedback about your teaching to aid in evaluating and improving your teaching.

Description: Read chapters 52 and 53 of the text. Then explore the "Services" area at the TEP website, and decide on the type of evaluation you prefer. Arrange the evaluation and followup consultation with TEP. Finally, report on your experience and any action(s) you take as a result of your evaluation.

Deadlines and deliverables:
Week 4 - text readings and TEP evaluations explore; arrange for evaluation;
Week 5 or 6 - classroom evaluation to take place;
Week 5 or 6 - review results of classroom evaluation with TEP;
Week 7-8 - implement one or more ideas from your review;
Week 9-10 - summarize (1-2p.) and turn in your evaluation and feedback experience: evaluation method(s), results, changes implemented, and your own thoughts on the evaluation.
