What is WICS?
Women in Computer Science (WICS) is a student group affiliated with the University of Oregon Department of Computer & Information Science. The purpose of WICS is to provide UO CIS women with benefits that contribute to their success. WICS is also interested in increasing the number of women in the field of Computer Science. In the past, WICS has provided scholarships, K-12 outreach, tutoring, mentoring, a monthly lunch series, a lecture series, and educational/career workshops.
Goals
- Contribute to the success of UO women and other underrepresented groups in CS
- Increase participation of women and other underrepresented groups in CS

The Student Diversity Affairs Committee (SDAC) invites you to a screening of the film Miss Representation (90 min; TV-14 DL). Written and directed by Jennifer Siebel Newsom, the film exposes how mainstream media contribute to the under-representation of women in positions of power and influence in America. The film challenges the media's limited and often disparaging portrayals of women and girls, which make it difficult for women to achieve leadership positions and for the average woman to feel powerful herself.

Keli Yerian, an instructor from the Linguistics Department and American English Institute presents this workshop designed to inform and support graduate students who are or will be writing academic papers in their fields. It will address the process of writing, as well as academic discourse conventions related to paper organization, author 'positioning' and clear writing style. References to additional resources will also be provided.

Wednesday, February 8, 2012 @ 11:00am — Workshop on Developing a Teaching Portfolio — Teaching Effectiveness Program
A teaching portfolio is a brief and comprehensive factual description with accompanying evidence of teaching activities and accomplishments that highlight what is unique or effective about your approach to teaching. Teaching portfolios are used at colleges and universities across the nation for hiring and for promotion and tenure review. This workshop will present how to develop and maintain a teaching portfolio, including e-portfolios. You will also begin to outline your own portfolio and have an opportunity to schedule times for ongoing support as you develop your portfolio. Graduate students or adjunct instructors who plan to apply for academic positions and newly-hired faculty in particular will benefit from this workshop.
