Aloha,
I am currently working on my Masters degrees in Computer Science here at the University of Oregon in Eugene, Oregon. As you might have guessed, from the pictures of my kids arranged into the word "Aloha" above, I am from Hawaii. I have a lot of interest in computers and networking specifically, and hope to study networking more. Below are some of my interests.

Academic/Development Interests

  • Computer Networks - I enjoy working with networking on many different levels. I like everything network, including creating network cables, configuring routers and switches, setting up and configuring web servers, creating static and dynamic web sites, programming client/server, studying network theory, and analysing network protocols and social networks.
  • Computer Graphics - Like most computer users, I like computer graphics. I am interested in graphics mostly at the 3d level, since that is where a lot of games happen. I am currently taking classes in Computer Graphics and Game Development so that I can better understand and use computer graphics in gaming.
  • OpenOffice.org - I use OpenOffice.org regularly for papers, and have always liked Open Source and Free software. I once (in 2003) wrote an on-line gradebook program (in violation of Blackboards patents at that time) and wanted to export to OpenOffice.org calc spreadsheets, but could not find a decent library, so I wrote one. It started out as a Perl library module, but then when I discovered Python, I created a Python version based on the new Open Document Format. I still spend a few hours a month on my OpenOffice.org Utility Library.
Other Interests

  • Reading - I really enjoy reading a good book every once in a while. These are some of the books that I have read recently: The Voyage of the Jerle Shannara (Ilse Witch, Antrax, Morgawr), Eragon, Eldest, and Three Cups of Tea.
  • Games - I have always loved games. Two of the games that I play most often are an MMORPG called Auteria and a turn based game called Battle for Wesnoth. I am working on networking and computer graphics in hopes that one day I will also have time to create games.
  • Photography - I like to take pictures, especially in nature. I once received an email from a magazine in South America asking if they could use a picture I took in Nagoya, Japan of a Cicada. I agreed and I assume they published the picture, but I really do not know.
  • Polynesian Culture - When I first started my bachelors degree, I had a job at the Polynesian Culture Center as a Japanese language tour guide. I learned a lot there, and have learned a lot more as my wife graduated with her bachelors degree in Hawaiian Studies and has participated in hula. She recently competed in the Merrie Monarch Festival hula competition. I am interested in learning Polynesian culture, language, and history.
