With National Science Foundation funding, the UO CSEMS program provides scholarships
and mentoring to students majoring in Computer Science or Mathematics at the
University of Oregon. Undergraduates in their junior or senior years, fifth year M.S. students, and
graduate students in their first year may apply. Applicants must be
United States citizens, nationals, refugee aliens, or permanent resident aliens at the time of application and must meet academic and financial criteria (described in the FAQs below).
Undergraduates who are awarded a scholarship must participate in the CSEMS activties. In the Fall '04 and Spring '05 terms there will be three activities at times to be announced. In the Winter '05 term, students will be required to take Careers Mentoring for CS & Math Students.
This course will be cotaught by the UO Career Center. It will focus on "Informational Interviews" that students conduct with professionals in their chosen field to assess their interest in specific careers and to "size up" organizations. Students can use information from these interviews to promote themselves to a prospective employer, and to network, opening the door to future contacts and job possibilities. The course teaches students the skills needed to make this mentoring interview effective. It gives them practice in presenting their findings and gives them a chance to hear reports on all of the interviews conducted, thus expanding their knowledge of related career paths. The course will meet 6 times with topics to include Career Planning, Identifying Strengths and Skills, Resume Writing, Cover Letters, and Informational Interviews.
