Abstract
This talk will give an overview of the research I am conducting that is related to supporting multicast, or one-to-many, communication on the Internet. Multicast is growing in importance on the Internet, as companies have begun to transmit real-time streams of audio and video on the public infrastructure. Multicast enables these applications to scale to very large audiences typical of "over the air" broadcasts -- i.e. millions of people.
Unfortunately, multicast tends to make many problems harder, so that basic functionality we expect from today's Internet becomes a challenge to design for this emerging area. Basics such as addressing, delivery, and reliability are all difficult to provide.
This talk will highlight some of my research in these areas, with a focus on routing issues.
