Representing and Reasoning with Modular Ontologies

Abstract
Semantic Web applications call for the knowledge base counterparts of hyperlinked documents so that independently created ontology modules can be flexibly linked and reused to meet the needs of specific applications, users, or contexts. We argue that ontology languages and tools should support selective knowledge sharing, collaborative ontology construction, accommodate reconciliation of multiple points of view about the world, and provide distributed reasoning services based on well-defined semantics and a sound proof theory. Against this background, this talk will give a brief overview of the techniques used and some of the recent results on modular ontologies, In particular, the talk will survey and critically compare several modular ontology proposals including Distributed Description Logics, E-connections, and Package-based Description Logics.
Biography
Jie Bao received his B.S. and M.S. in electrical engineering from Hefei University of Technology, and his Ph.D. from Iowa State University. He is currently a Postoc research associate at Iowa State University. His work is focused on knowledge representation, semantic web, data integration, and web privacy.
