Abstract

Reconfigurable computing is emerging as the new paradigm for satisfying the simultaneous demand for application performance, power consumption, flexibility and mask costs, which represents an intermediate approach between the extremes of ASICs (Application Specific Integrated Circuits) and GPPs (General-Purpose Processors). Generally, a reconfigurable processor is composed of the hardware RPUs (Reconfigurable Processing Units) and the software-programmable processors, which therefore has wider applicability than ASIC, and results in better performance and power consumption for many application classes than GPP. With the continuous scaling down in VLSI technology, a reconfigurable processor can integrate more and more heterogeneous or homogeneous PEs (Processing Elements), and hence offers abundant functional efficiency of hardware and the programmability of software.

This talk first analyzes the megatrend of the reconfigurable computing from computer architecture, semiconductor industry and economy perspectives. Then, introduces REMUS (REconfigurable MUltimedia System), which was developed to demonstrate the effectiveness of reconfigurable computing for word-level, computation-intensive multimedia applications. The suitability of REMUS for the targeted application domain can also be extended to other computation-intensive applications, such as Image Processing, Communication Baseband Processing, Encryption, Target Recognition etc.
