CIS Department welcomes new Director of Undergraduate Studies Dr. Kathleen Freeman Hennessy

Dr. Kathleen Freeman Hennessy will join the instructional staff of the Computer and Information Science Department as an instructor and the Director of Undergraduate Studies starting in the fall term of the 2011-2012 academic year.

Kathy received a B.S. degree in Mathematics with Honors from Bucknell University in 1982 and her Ph.D. in Computer Science in 1993 from the University of Oregon. Her research investigated computational models of argumentation. She has taught a variety of undergraduate CIS classes in the Computer Science Department at the University of Oregon, including upper and lower division and introductory courses, as well as a teaching effectiveness seminar for graduate students. Prior to coming to Oregon, she worked in the computer industry as a programmer/analyst at Shared Medical Systems (now Siemens) in Malvern, PA. Current interests include teaching computing concepts, including computer programming and computational thinking, to general audiences.

As the Director of Undergraduate Studies, Kathy will work closely with the department's Undergraduate Education Committee on projects such as undergraduate curriculum assessment and updates.

This fall, Kathy will teach the graduate student teaching effectiveness seminar and in the spring she will teach Introduction to Programming with Python (CIS 122).
