CIS 610 Teaching Effectiveness:
Tools for Teaching
Winter 2010
General Information and Policies
About the course: The CIS Teaching Effectiveness seminar is a
department offering for CIS gtfs and others
interested in teaching computer science. It is intended to benefit
gtfs and the entire CIS department by providing a forum for discussion
and enhancement of computer science teaching skills. At the end of
this course, participants should have a well-defined philosophy of
computer science teaching; an awareness of how they teach and how they
might teach more effectively; and a selection of tools for effective teaching.
Who should take this course: The seminar is required for new
CIS gtfs. Returning gtfs and other department members interested in computer science teaching are
welcome to take the course for credit or drop in for any particular
week. (See Syllabus for a weekly schedule of topics.)

Grading: All grades are Pass/No pass. A passing grade will be
given for regular attendance at and thoughtful participation in weekly
class meetings, and the completion of a teaching project. Thoughtful
participation will depend in part on pre-class completion of short reading
and sometimes written assignments.
Missing or being unprepared for more than
three class meetings for any reason will automatically result in a no
pass grade.
As readings and assignments are designed to enable participation in class meetings, late
work will not be accepted. For exceptions to this and any other policy, please see me.
Accommodations: Please talk to me as soon as possible if you have a disability
that requires academic accommodations, so we can work out the necessary arrangements.
