The goals of the HCI group include:

  • Basic research into the theory of human-computer interaction:
    • cognitive modeling
    • command languages, query languages, programming languages
    • display and control technologies (joystick, color, etc.)
    • on-line help systems and educational systems
    • graphic interfaces
    • visualization
    • natural language interfaces

  • Specification & rapid prototyping tools for user interface design:

    • formal specification techniques for interactive systems
    • knowledge-based design systems
    • interface simulators
    • user interface management systems

  • Evaluation for existing and emerging products:

    • product benchmarking
    • testing on selected user populations and performance

  • Education in human-computer interaction and user interface programming
