Graduate Study in HCI at the UO:

The Program on Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) in the Department of Computer and Information Science at the University of Oregon was founded by Professor Sarah Douglas in 1983. A second faculty member, Anthony Hornof joined the group in 1999.

Students enter either the M.S. or Ph.D. graduate program in Computer & Information Science with a specific interest in HCI. Basic courses in HCI and User Interfaces are offered at the senior/beginning graduate level. Within the Computer and Information Science Department there are a number of other complementary courses in graphics, visualization and software engineering. From other departments students in HCI can take a rich array of pertinent courses in cognitive science, psychology, linguistics and sociology.

Both Professor Douglas and Professor Hornof maintain active research groups. The current projects in Professor Douglas' research lab are

  • advanced interaction techniques including haptic feedback devices
  • User interface design for WWW scientific databases: software to support information fusion such as WWW notebooks, image querying, and distributed usability testing methods
  • algorithm and information visualization.
Professor Hornof's research projects are in cognitive modeling, primarily visual search and use of eye-trackers.

For more information about general requirements for admission to the CIS department, please visit the departmental pages. For information about research options in HCI, please review the goals page and contact the appropriate faculty member to discuss your interests.
